Drinking Water Analysis
ECW provides well water testing service for those that rely on groundwater as their potable water source. ECW uses the Colilert® method and 51 well Quanti-Trays™ to detect and enumerate total coliform and E. coli bacteria.
Colilert® uses Defined Substrate Technology (DST) to simultaneously detect total coliforms and E. coli. Quanti-Tray™ is a multi-well, most probable number (MPN) method. After a 24 hour incubation period, the MPN is calculated from the number of positive wells and is reported as MPN/100ml.
The Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality are published by Health Canada on behalf of the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Committee on Drinking Water (CDW). These guidelines state that the maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) of total coliforms and E. coli in public, semi-public, and private drinking water systems is “non-detectable”, or zero colony forming units (cfu’s) per 100ml.
The laboratory, including its staff and testing procedures, is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada under ISO/EIC 17025:2005.
Who Should Test Their Water
It is recommended by Health Canada that the following guidelines are adhered to by homes that depend on well water:
• Test residential wells for bacteria twice per year, in the early spring and fall
• Additional testing of well water is recommended after a heavy rain event, or following an extended dry spell
• Testing is recommended if there is nearby construction, changes to plumbing, or an extended period of non-use
• Anyone buying or selling a home
Health Canada recommends that residential wells are screened for inorganic contaminants once every two years. At this time ECW subcontracts the analysis of inorganic parameters. As part of our service, our laboratory professionals will arrange to have your water tested for any or all of the following parameters:
Alkalinity, Aluminum, Ammonia Antimony, Arsenic, Boron, Barium, Bromide, Cadmium, Calcium, Chloride, Chromium, Conductivity, Copper, Fluoride, Hardness, Iron, Lead, Magnesium, Manganese, Nitrate/Nitrite, pH, Potassium, Selenium, Sodium, Sulfate, Thallium, Turbidity, Uranium, Zinc
ECW is pleased to offer a convenient collection service for those interested in hassle free peace of mind.
Customers can also sign up for automated sample collection, ensuring their water is tested regularly.
Those customers who prefer to deliver their own water are asked to first visit ECW to pick up an approved sample bottle.
